Ducks, wine and a race day! What’s Going On In Tassie?

Encounter Travel at Puddleduck
Wine tasting at Puddleduck Winery, Tasmania

'Quacking' the code for cancer. How a simple idea from one family owned winery in Tassie creates a great afternoon out, and it’s all for a good cause.

At Puddleduck Winery, a boutique family owned winery they’re doing everything right. An energy neutral winery, a unique Reverse BYO®, friendly family service, superb Tasmanian wine, and the big one, their bi annual Puddleduck Dunk Charity Duck Race.

Not far from Hobart in the charming town of Richmond are 100’s of ducks eagerly waiting their fate in the race.

After losing a friend to breast cancer and family to prostate cancer, for the last 8 years, the duck race has drawn crowds at the Puddleduck dam. The one goal - raising funds and awareness to support three charities that mean a lot to the family and many others.

SO SIMPLE - WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
It’s a simple concept – but who would have thought? Ask winery visitors, at the cellar door or online to sponsor a duck in the race. At just $10 a duck it’s an easy ask and you get to choose your charity of choice you want to support.  Pink ducks for Breast Cancer Research, Blue for Prostate Cancer Research and Yellow ducks for Childhood Cancer Research.

The next race is not far off. Held 2pm on 25 May 2019, and there’s still time to pick a duck, support cancer research and if you win, you’ll take away the prestige of the Duck Race winner and a case of Puddleduck wine.

So, in case by now you weren’t sure….they’re not real ducks so animal welfare is taken care off too. By a bathtub duck, each numbered, and it’s thrown into the nett ready to be released on the dam on race day.  Fire trucks come out and hose the ducks across the lake. And it’s not just first place winners but 2nd and 3rd also take home a prize and last duck standing gets a bottle of bubbleduck.

The Puddleduck Great Race 25 May 2019

If you’re in the neighbourhood, pop in to get your duck. And make plans to take advantage of Puddleduck's unique Reverse BYO® - Puddleduck has the wine, and you bring your own food to enjoy at the outdoor areas. There’s also other drinks including local beers, ciders, and spirits.

And what’s our solo connection? Our annual favourite, Tasmanian Highlights Solos Only tour takes a behind the scenes look at Puddleduck winery, finishing with a sit down, 5 wine tasting with cheese. And all guided by a Puddleduck family member. You may even come across their pet duck Buttercup and of course the chance to sponsor a duck for their next race.
