Ready for a chilled adventure with your taste buds? It's time for a Gelato Showdown!

Where is the best gelato in the world?

Is Australia a contender for the title?

The true magic of solo travel unfolds in the small moments. It's not just about exploring new places; it's about savouring the sweet solitude of your own company, and unique experiences connected to those countries we visit. In Italy we can’t go past gelato as a taste, and an indulgent experience synonymous with visiting the country. Right?

But, is there a risk of watering down the gelato moment in Italy because we know it so well already in Australia?

Where is the best gelato in the world?

Picture this: gelato in hand, and a city of wonders sprawled before you. Your solo travellers have taken you to Italy, at long last (or back again after too long).  You’ve settled into a spot with the ancient cobblestone streets at your feet, or perhaps a bustling urban landscape. …… you take a slow, deliberate lick of your gelato, savouring not just the flavour but the entire experience.

But just as you relish the first lick, a delicious dilemma creeps in…… you ponder if your local favourite gelateria back home tops this Italian indulgence? Could it be that you set out with the intent of delighting in Italian gelato only to realise that the gelato back home is just as good, if not better?

We’ve seen the rise of the gelateria in our cities and towns in Australia. Sure, we’ve had gelato in Australia for decades but in more recent years there’s been an onslaught of delightful options. It’s not a bad conflict to have; when your taste buds, enchanted by the gelato wonders of Italy, suddenly whisper a familiar sweetness that you know from back home on our Aussie shores.

And now to contemplate and explore the question: Is the true gelato gem hidden in the heart of Australia?

Gelato: In History

Originating in Italy during the Renaissance, gelato has been gracing taste buds for centuries. Its smoother texture and denser consistency, compared to traditional ice cream, are owed to a slower churning process and a lower freezing temperature.

Italian gelato artisans perfected their craft, creating a dessert that became synonymous with the sweet streets of Rome, Florence, and beyond.  And now, gelato has transcended borders, making its mark as a global indulgence.

The Aussie Gelato Invasion

Now, let's fast forward to the Aussie scene. Australia, known for its diverse culinary experiences, has embraced gelato with open arms. The gelato culture Down Under isn't just a trend; it's a celebration of flavours from local produce to exotic inspirations.

Gelato in Australia: Where to Savour the Chill

It’s just a few listed, my favourites. Counting up all the gelaterias in Australia would be a big task with a long list and I’ll rely on some feedback from our solo travellers to share their top spots.

Gelato Messina: An institution in the gelato game, Messina takes its inspiration from classic Italian methods while injecting a dose of Aussie creativity. Their rotating flavours include everything from Salted Coconut and Mango Salsa to decadent White Chocolate and Hazelnut.

Rivareno Gelato: A personal favourite boasts ‘Made fresh daily’ and the authentic Italian experience, created with traditional Italian recipes – but also seeking out new recipes.  To me, it’s intense, and sublime.

Gelatissimo: options galore including dairy free, low sugar and vegan friendly, Gelatissimo spreads it’s sweetness around Australia.

Gelato Fun Facts

Let's dish out some cold, hard (or rather, soft and creamy) facts.

  1. In Italy, gelato isn't just a treat; it's a way of life.
  1. Gelato vs. Ice Cream: Gelato typically contains less fat than ice cream, making it a guilt-free pleasure. The slower churning process incorporates less air, resulting in a denser, more flavourful treat.
  1. Gelato in Space: Believe it or not, gelato has made its way to space! In 2014, a shipment of chocolate and vanilla gelato was sent to the International Space Station for astronauts to enjoy in orbit.

The Verdict: Your Gelato Journey Awaits!

So, solo globetrotters, as you embark on your gelato journey, whether in the heart of Italy or the vibrant landscapes of Australia, it’s about the moment in time and slowing to savour your gelato treat. Maybe it’s not a question of where is the gelato better but where does the moment take you?

Share your favourite solo gelato spots and let the world know if Australia's gelato prowess rivals the gelato gods in Italy!

So after leaving you here thinking about your next gelato - a final thought to ponder; does Australia steal the gelato spotlight from the birthplace of this frozen magic – Italy? Well, that’s a question of taste – your taste!
