DRESS IN INDIA
The dress code in India overall is conservative and is different to western dress and some items that some travellers may wear at home are not appropriate in India if you wish to respect local culture.
You may find traditional Indian clothes are more comfortable than Western clothes, especially in the heat. Wearing local attire is well received. While it’s OK to wear Western clothes a modest attire is respectful.
Women need to consider dress to cover your knees, upper arms, shoulders, cleavage and midriff. Attire should not be revealing. Wearing a sari is the exception as it exposes your midriff. Shorts and short skirts are not acceptable. It's inappropriate to wear sheer blouses, shorts, spaghetti-strap dresses, bikinis, tank tops, etc. However short sleeves are usually OK.
For the men: tank tops and singlets are not acceptable. T-shirts covering upper arms would be more suitable.
Wear light, loose clothing for comfort for travel and heat. Swimwear should be conservative. At some places of worship women may be required to cover their head, and visitors to places of worship remove shoes.
